The creation of the Tambopata National Reserve
At the beginning of the 1990s, many biologists and conservationists joined together to request that one of the largest areas of virgin rainforest be protected and preserved. They succeeded in having this geographic area declared a Reserved Zone, as it is one of the few places in the world that contains lowland rainforest, cloud forests, humid savannas, and pre-Andean ecosystems. It was also confirmed that this area hosts healthy populations of species such as tapirs, jaguars, giant river otters, harpy eagles, macaws, toucans, parrots, and many other animals that had disappeared from other parts of the Amazon. Many researchers considered that this protected area could serve as an important biological corridor between Manu National Park and the forests of neighboring Bolivia.
Initially, what is now the Tambopata National Reserve and Bahuaja Sonene National Park were part of the “Tambopata-Candamo Reserved Zone”. However, despite achieving some level of protection, existing laws were not strong enough to prevent land exploitation, which meant the area remained at risk.
To achieve permanent protection of the land, flora, and fauna, many conservation organizations conducted further studies showing that the Tambopata-Candamo Reserved Zone was vital for preserving biodiversity. These studies helped build a strong case to change Tambopata’s status from a “reserved zone” to a “national reserve”, granting it official and permanent protection.
A jewel of the Peruvian Amazon
Before starting a tour in this region, you should know some important facts about the Tambopata National Reserve. This impressive reserve, located in southeastern Peru, covers a total area of 274,690 hectares. One of its main characteristics is its variety of climates and microclimates, which create a wide diversity of habitats. These ecosystems are home to more than 1,000 species of butterflies, 100 species of mammals, around 600 species of birds, and hundreds of tree and plant species.
The reserve is crossed by three important rivers: the Malinowski River, the Tambopata River, and the Madre de Dios River. You should also know that the Tambopata National Reserve is considered one of the most biodiverse places on Earth, where many species once believed to be extinct have been found.
The “Ese eja” community and Tambopata Research Center
In the middle of this impressive natural reserve, there is a community known as Ese Eja. It is located within the grounds of one of the most impressive Amazon lodges: the Tambopata Research Center. Here, families preserve their traditions, customs, and extensive knowledge of medicinal plants and wildlife.
Scientists aim to gather this knowledge to support the classification and research of new species. Over time, a way was found to support the local community by allowing them to co-manage this area, which receives thousands of nature-loving tourists every year.
Enjoy the Peruvian Amazon, Tambopata awaits you!
Because of the history and richness of this important reserve, we invite you to enjoy a pleasant stay in some of the best lodges such as Refugio Amazonas, Posada Amazonas, and Tambopata Research Center.
